Silent Hill anyone???
How can there be no talk of the superlative Silent Hill series of video games around here? There can be nothing more Kultesque than this game: the
"other" place the characters are thrust into? It IS METROPOLIS! Frequent visits to the sewers, discarded, bloody wheelchairs in the oddest
of places, suspended bodies wrapped in dirty sheets, secret cults, sacrifices, clues regarding ancient Jewish and Native American religions...these
games are masterpieces, and form the reason for my return to Kult after too many years.
There is apparently a fourth installment planned and a movie on the way. I'm gonna play SH3 right now...

Silent Hill
It has been brought up a few
times in the past on the Forums.
I think it seems Kultesque...

Yeah!
Had a long thread about it on the last forum that crashed!
Have played 1, 2 and 3 and the atmosphere is great. Of course no 3 is the best as it combines the better plot from no 1 and the better graphics from
no 2 (improved even more).
The game can definitely give you quite a few ideas on how to change from illusion to metropolis/inferno in an aesthetic way.
I do tend to get bored by all adventure games in the long run though.
THE END

Why I love the Japanese...
Another Silent Hill-a-like game soon to be released is also a blatant rip-off of the excellent Ring movies, so watch out for it on PS2. Other fine
Japanese horror ventures include Tadashi Miike's brilliant Audition (best torture scene with cheese wire in any movie) and the shocking Battle
Royale, which is very Hareb-serap.

I haven't played any of them except a demo of Silent Hill 1 for PS.
I have SH3 though... haven't taken the time to play it yet.

Sorry for the slow response lads and lasses, I an very very very slowly catching up with all posts on this forum.
About Silent Hill: I really like the game. First time I played Silent Hill, I had no clue what the game was all about. ( A friend just dropped by with
the game and the quote 'You gotta play this!' ) So I must say the horror effect had a bigger impact om me than on most folks. I got spooked
s***less when I encountered those horrible little babies in the alleyway.
If I have to compare Resident Evil with the Silent Hill series, the last one wins by far.
I havent really played Silent Hill 2 to the same extent, just watched it when !mpy played and I totally love the design of the monsters. The
pyramid-head one is genial and very freaky, and probably a creature every gamemaster drools over. (much better than the Nemesis in RE, I think and
much more usable in horror games)
And to my great shame I must admit I havent played or seen Silent Hill 3. Any links on the art/artists or conceptual art surrounding it? I looked on
the Konami page and found the official page, which gives no vibe. ( And on a scarier note...Konami still sells Frogger..)
damn you aquascum!

This little pic should say it all. It occurs, somewhat incongruously, as the young (or is she???) heroine Heather is exploring an abandoned office
complex...a monstrous, plaintive howl sounds out from the gloom, accompanied by the bittersweet warmth of urine crawling down your leg...

Frogger rules.
I've liked all the Silent Hill series so far. Found large portions usable for inspiration with a few that aren't (fighting the big moth
looking bug from the building top). All and all I will continue to get anything new put out for the line. However what pisses me off is that there
is extra story in different platform version of the game. Part 2 doing this the most.
Argghh..
Anyways... later.

Verily, Mr Konami is a penurious soul, struggling to pay for his third yacht. He is required to put out twelve variations of a single game just to
make ends meet!
This profiteering wouldn't piss me off if any new material added something to the plot (particularly in the case of the inscrutable SH2). Still,
I bought the Director's Cut version....Charity begins at home!
If past franchises are anything to go by (notably Tomb Raider, the Tony Hawk series, others..) developers feel the need to shake up the gameplay a
little after the third release, meaning the next visit to the Hill should be something very special indeed.

Alternatively you can check out this very interesting review which also has some interesting screenshots.
But to really get the best idea of the game, you should check out this awesome trailer for the game.

Definitely a must have series for kult fans. I have to say, the fourth one sounds like a lads-night-in-gone-wrong. Sounds like fun.
I now inform you that you are too far from reality!

I doubt it will be a classic, but with the required budget and a cast of talented but unknown actors it should be enjoyable enough. I think the best
we can hope for is a decent no-brainer like the Resident Evil movie.
The soundtrack to SH4 is the best since the twiddling strings of the first installment. It's a shame I'll be buying it for my PS2 instead of
my troublesome PC. Is there some kind of magical device which will allow me to lift sounds from a console CD in to my PC?

Yeah. SH3 came out on PC a couple of months after the console release in summer of last year.
I think the UK is grouped with the rest of Europe when it comes to video games (Japan gets it, the US gets it a week later, and Europe gets it a six
months after that), so it should be available in Italy. SH4 will probably be released on all formats at once when it gets released this Xmas season.

wonder if you could borrow all of SH and play as a Kultgame or if it would be to boring.

I think it would be pretty lame, even if your players have no experience of the SH series.
As GM I would quickly get bored guiding players through a plot I've played through some five or six times myself, and I think that my disinterest
would rub off on the game.
As I said in the other thread on SH though, I consider both games to be, for all intents and purposes, the same thing. Also I don't often get
blocked trying to come up with Kult plots, so for me the idea of recreating any of the SH games is unappealing and unnecessary. I am prone to stealing
the odd scene here and there, though.
And to be totally honest, I'm still trying to figure out the exact plot of the first game, six years after it's release. Maybe I'll
play it through once more and try to come up with a Kult interpretation...

I've actually gm:ed SH1 as a Kult adventure. It was ALMOST identical to the consolegame:
Carcrash
Missing girl
Fog
Holes in ground
School
Metropolisversion of school.
However, once they reached the hospital I had to do some major changes, since the hospital is just a huge puzzle.
Anyway, worked out great. My players had an extra creepy feeling upon trying SH afterwards, since it was almost a deja vu feeling for them.

in the kind of kultgames I like to GM there´s always a whole lot of surreal environments which can get quite exhausting to explain. Sure, players sits
and listens to me but after a while it gets worn out :-(. Well, I guess I have to have more actionscenes in the games!

Shouldn't be problem really. My SH (Creston) was allready known to the players, so I didn't have to describe that part of the setting. They
allready knew what the town looked like. However, Creston was now covered in a thick fog and some of the streets where blocked by huge canyons. I was
afraid that this would get boring, but they where to occupied with beeing worried about what was out in the fog to ever get bored.

Never played the first SH, but have the second one sitting in my PS2. Bought it a year ago and have FINALLY started it (ya see kids ... when you get
married and suddenly find yourself a dad to twins you lose a lot of the freetime you once enjoyed so always use protection -- this has been a public
service announcement). So far I have to say the game rocks and I just checked out the Windows Media trailer for SH$: The Room and cannot wait for it
to hit the shelves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recomend that you try to find SH1.
I personally think it's better than SH2, apart from the graphics of course.

The song on the trailer is twisted and beautiful. Gotta rip it.
Apparently the SH4 plot goes something like this: Henry (or Harry) Townshend wakes up locked in his apartment. A strange portal has opened in his
bathroom, leading to a creepy and distinctly kultesque netherworld. There he meets Eileen, the woman from the apartment next to his, looking worse
for wear with her arm in a sling and scars on her back that spell out a number. She may be involved with the multiple homicide that took place in the
woods a few nights ago...
It looks like the excursions into metropolis, er...I mean the "other world" will be done in first person perspective, allowing you to peek
through keyholes at approaching horrors. Also I've read that weapon changes take place in real time, dispensing with the pause menu inventory and
adding a bit to the realism. There is also an obligatory Sadako (Ring) rip-off involved. My only hope is that the monsters can open doors this time,
rather than standing like barely-scripted sentinels in the path of the player.
